Welcome to the ECO-trip site

What is the ECO-trip?

A recreative trip with 'clean' vehicles. Mostly, many recumbent bicycles join the trip, but other bicycles, solar powered vehicles, and other non-polluting vehicles show themselves as well.

What is the aim of the ECO-trip?

To show that you can have a nice holiday in a proper way.
The aims are propagating clean tourism, enjoying nice nature and culture together, and bringing together like-minded people.

How came the ECO-trip into existence?

In 1998 in Finland, there was a small group of people who called themselves 'Kevytkulkuneuvojen Ystävät' (friends of lightweight vehicles).
This group was very small and liked to get more attention to their aims. Moreover, these people wanted to have a nice holiday trip together. They devised a plan that the group would be bigger and would get more attention if foreign participants would be invited, too. This way, under the guidance of Olli Kuusisto, the ECO-trip was born.
The first four years the trip rode every time the same route; later they chose every time another part of Finland.

Where is the ECO-trip?

ECO-trips are ridden every year in the homeland, Finland. Besides of that, trips are organised in varying countries. In 2002 there was a trip in Switzerland, in 2003 in the Netherlands and in 2004 in Northumbria, Britain.
You can read a lot about the ECO-trips of the past, behind the grey tab on top of this site: 'previous ECO-trips'.
Planned trips all have their own tab. Click on it for more information.

Who organises the ECO-trip?

Volunteers who like to cooperate with the aims of the trips. There is no official organisation associated with the trips, but many hpv- (Human Powered Vehicles) organisations support the initiative with all their hearts.

Who can join the ECO-trip?

Everyone who subscribes to the aims and who is able to join the trip.

What is the price of the ECO-trip?

The price of the ECO-trip is always kept as low as possible, and there are no profits. Because everyone brings his/her own vehicle and the nights are passed in simple accommodations, the price can be kept very low.
